A basic service package that an accountant may offer can quickly become very expensive when your accountant charges you extra for:

• Additional time spent on your account;
• The provision of services that are a statutory necessity such as year end self assessment returns;
• Services that you need to keep on top of your finances such as a bookkeeping service and monthly management accounts.

Often accountants are simply not organised to be able to provide day-to-day services like invoicing or cash reconciliation or indeed, full monthly management accounts.

You may have to go elsewhere for extra services such as IR35 protection or key insurances, such as professional indemnity. It is important that you understand the services you must have, together with the services you want, and ensure you have the prices for all these services before you sign up to anything. You may find the cheapest service quickly becomes part of a very expensive total package.

A typical accountancy service offered by high street accountants will be an annual service; this does not include day-to-day support and advice.

It is very rare to find an accountant with the technology that enables them to review you bank statements daily, match invoices to cash received on a daily basis and send you an SMS notification.

Some accountants may only be available by appointment and can often charge extra for their time. Brookson accountants for contractors charge an all inclusive fee that includes unlimited access to a dedicated Customer Services Team. We do not charge by the hour.
