Government to protect 'creative' contractors

The government has unveiled a three-pronged strategy to target illegal filesharers as part of a bid to protect entrepreneurs and freelancers working within the creative industries.

According to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), businesses and internet service providers need to work with the government to try and curb the burgeoning trend.

Warning notifications followed by a threat of legal action should help prevent repeat offenders although the authorities are to reserve the right to order internet service providers to take action, BIS explained.

Lord Mandelson, business secretary, said: "The creative sector has faced challenges to protected formats before. But the threat faced today from online infringement, particularly unlawful file-sharing, is of a different scale altogether. We cannot sit back and do nothing."

He added that copyright laws need to be modernised to reflect the changing ways people are using technology.

The politician made the comments during a speech to the C&binet creative industries conference.
