BCC: Olympics will be very good for UK business
24 November 2009Posted by Alex Turner
The London 2012 Olympic Games, which already involves more than 1,000 UK businesses, will generate thousands of job opportunities along the network of supply, a new report has shown.
UK businesses have secured the majority of the £5 billion worth of contracts, official data published by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) yesterday (November 23rd) showed.
Over 7,000 people are currently working for contractors on the Olympic Park and Village.
Earlier this month, the government announced that £1.7 billion worth of contracts were still "up for grabs".
Sam Turvey, communications manager at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "The Olympics is a huge procurement opportunity, particularly for London businesses.
"It seems to us that other British chambers around the country have been actively encouraging their members to bid for these contracts."
Recent figures released by the government showed that 98 per cent of Olympic contracts had been awarded to UK firms.
This included a Scottish company who designed an electrical substation and companies from Bolton and Wales who supplied steel for the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre roof.
