Social network scams are 'on the rise'
03 February 2010Posted by James Curtis
Contractors who use social networking websites in order to promote their services could be increasingly targeted by online scams, according to a new report.
Figures released by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) have revealed that nine per cent of all adults have been approached by internet fraudsters on networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
The data also revealed that almost half of those targeted lost more than £50 while five per cent had more than £5,000 taken form their accounts.
According to the report, the majority of scams are now carried out online with a further 73 per cent being conducted via e-mail.
Consumer minister Kevin Brennan said: "It is really important that people are on their guard and know that help is available as scams can bring real upset and misery to their victims."
John Fingleton, chief executive of the OFT, explained that internet fraudsters are using "ever more sophisticated and cunning tactics to dupe people out of their cash".
