Increase in women's earnings
05 February 2010Posted by James Curtis
Female contractors aged in their thirties and fifties cold be among those to have noticed an increase in their earnings, a new report has suggested.
Research carried out by the National Equalities Panel has revealed that women in the two age groups who are on "middle incomes" have seen the biggest increase in their earnings.
The report may not come as such good news to male contractors, as the study also revealed that men under the age of 50-years have noticed a reduction in their weekly earnings.
However, men aged over 50-years were found to have noticed an improvement in their income, according to the report.
The news that women are reporting increased incomes was welcomed by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said: "It is encouraging that women are earning more at work. Unions have fought long and hard for equality in the workplace.
"Legislation like the Equality Bill is crucial if we are to ensure that more is done for the many women who are still on low pay, to reflect their skills and the important work that they do."
