Engineering opportunities 'likely in green economy'

Contractors in the engineering sector could benefit from opportunities created through the UK's transition to a low carbon economy.

David Kidney, minister for energy and climate change, said that investing in the green economy will not generate a return unless there is investment in a skilled workforce.

He added in a speech at the annual RenewableUK tidal and wave power conference that he expects the majority of green energy produced in the UK to come from the wind industry.

It is there in this area in which the majority of jobs are likely to be created.

"We have an ageing workforce and a competing pool of young people in training. We need to look at how we can invent skills across all sectors to get to a low carbon economy," Mr Kidney explained.

According to research by the Carbon Trust, the wind energy industry may be worth £75 billion by the end of the decade. In addition, some 70,000 new jobs may be created in the sector over the next ten years, with hundreds of contracting opportunities becoming available.
