REC: Public sector pay freezes could turn away new talent
11 March 2010Posted by Alex Turner
A number of highly-skilled workers in the UK, including sole traders and limited company contractors, could be putt off working in the public sector due to announced pay freezes.
This is the view of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), following prime minister Gordon Brown's announcement that top public sector workers will have their pay frozen.
The comment was made as Mr Brown announced that the Budget will be announced on March 24th.
Kevin Green, the REC's chief executive, said: "Pay freezes and other short term cost cutting measures must not mask the need for deep-rooted reform to services across the public sector.
"In the short-term, limiting pay is understandable but it is crucial that the public sector remains competitive in order to attract the kind of talent that can lead organisational transformation."
Mr Green claimed that temporary change management experts could provide valuable services while avoiding "full employment costs".
