Contactors working in the biotechnology industry could be among those to benefit from a new demonstrator facility in the north-east.
Construction work has begun on the new facility in Wilton, Teesside, which is hoped to "support future opportunities, growth and jobs".
The government has invested £12 million into the project and expects the UK market potential for chemicals made by industrial biotechnology to reach £12 billion by 2025.
Business minister Ian Lucas said: "The government and One North East have committed £60 million for the Tees Valley to support future opportunities, growth and jobs.
"The Wilton chemicals complex is one of the biggest employers in the region, and I'm delighted to be here to see the latest developments which will give a real boost to green jobs in the north-east and to the chemicals industry in the UK."
Mr Lucas also announced the 19 winners of a £2.5 million competition, including businesses, universities and research organisations, to use the facilities once construction is completed.
