August saw 'unusually steady' recruitment market

Contractors working in the UK as sole traders or limited companies may be among those affected by rising staff demands in the private sector.

According to the latest review of the UK jobs market by the employment agency Reed, demand for new workers defied the usual slump over the summer season and stayed constant last month.

Indeed, the report noted that vacancies in some sectors rose to their highest levels this year including in leisure, tourism and accountancy.

While it was noted that public sector jobs growth was less robust in August, Reed suggested this trend could by offset by a rise in private sector recruitment.

Martin Warnes, the managing director of Reed, said: "While the seasonal tourist boom and an unexpected rise in consumer confidence may have helped to fuel record demand for new staff in leisure, tourism and retail, it seems that overall confidence, particularly in the services sector, has been slowly but steadily building over the summer."

Meanwhile, Stephen Overell, associate director of the Work Foundation, claimed recently that the impact of the coalition government's spending cuts will be felt for at least two years.
