Public sector IT jobs slump

Contractors working as sole traders or limited companies in the UK's IT industry could be set to become heavily reliant on the private sector for work, it has been suggested.

Recruitment firm ReThink Recruitment has recently released a new report which claims that just four per cent of new IT jobs will be in the public sector.

The company said that it currently has just 194 public sector IT vacancies on its books, compared to more than 5,000 roles in the private sector.

Michael Bennett, director at ReThink, said that demand for IT workers from public sector organisations has dwindled as many projects have been shelved due to the coalition's spending cuts.

"Since the coalition came to power in May, public sector recruitment freezes have really taken hold," he said.

"IT projects have been abolished, and consequently demand for IT skills has been very subdued."

According to the study, demand for IT workers from public sector bodies has declined by 30 per cent since the start of the year.
