Contractors working as sole traders and others contemplating setting up a business in the UK could be among those encouraged by the findings of a new report.

Data released by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has shown that the majority of the British public have faith in businesses.

Indeed, some 82 per cent of the 2,000 people the BCC questioned said that as long as they comply with the law, pay taxes and make a profit then businesses are "good for Britain".

The study, carried out by ComRes on behalf of the BCC, also showed that 73 per cent of Britons believe that local businesses play an important role in local communities.

John Longworth, director-general of the BCC, said: "Business is at the centre of the economy and only the private sector will drive recovery and help deliver public services, like education, healthcare and pensions.

"It is the foundation of local communities, creating the wealth that helps them thrive, providing hard-working people with purpose, self respect, employment and training for those that want to learn."
