The UK's limited company contractors could be among those benefiting from increased demand for staff.

According to the latest research published in the Reed JobIndex, overall demand for staff increased last month, with a two point rise compared to December 2011.

The rise was fairly widespread with 20 of the 34 sectors covered by the report showing increased demand for services.

While charity work, estate agency and marketing were the best-performing industries, the banking sector saw job opportunities fall.

Indeed, with an index reading of 66 points, the sector was 76 per cent behind the same month last year.

The report also showed that earning had remained fairly stable, showing only a minor decline.

"Salaries for new jobs available in January slipped back one point compared to December, giving a Reed Salary Index of 98," the report stated.

"However, salaries remain two points lower than when the Index began in December 2009, when the Salary Index was set at 100."
