The government has been encouraged to use contractor workers.

UK limited company contractors could be used to help ease some of the problems currently being encountered by the public sector.

That is according to Stuart Davies, chairman of the Freelancer and Contractor Services Association, who said that the coalition should feel comfortable using contractors at any level within the civil service.

Contracting work, Mr Davies explained, is a "legitimate and valuable way of working that benefits both employers and employees, and generally the competitive elements of the UK economy, which are recognised as necessary for recovery and growth".

UK contactors represent a vital cog in the public sector machine, bringing a welcome degree of flexibility for employers. This is a point acknowledged recently by David Cameron, the prime minister, who said that freelance workers make a significant contribution to the economy.

Meanwhile, Chris Bryce, the chairman of PCG, urged people "rushing to attack limited companies" not to "trample the only green shoots of recovery".
