The UK's IT contractors are set to notice increased demand for their services over the coming 12 months.

That is after the latest forecast by Deloitte claimed that 2012 will see a number of large firms embark on "big data" projects.

According to the firm, such projects will be worth between £650 million and £1 billion this year.

This could see a number of firms turn to highly-skilled IT contractors to ensure that the projects are carried out to the highest possible standard, while keeping permanent headcounts down.

Jolyon Barker, global lead for Deloitte's technology, media & telecommunications industry, commented: "So-called 'big data' projects had a total industry revenue of only £65 million in 2009.

"However, 2012 will see 90 per cent of Fortune 500 companies kick off a data-related initiative, which will boost the industry's revenue to between £650 million and £1 billion."

The expert added that acceptance of big data is "still in its infancy", suggesting there is scope for interest to gather pace.
