The number of job opportunities posted online for IT contractors is on the rise.

That is according to the latest Monster Employment Index UK, which revealed that IT has overtaken engineering as the country's leading annual growth sector.

Overall, the number of job postings increased by four per cent, while IT specific roles enjoyed growth of 23 per cent.

Limited company contractors working in the engineering field, meanwhile, saw a 16 per cent rise in the number of jobs posted online.

Julian Acquari, managing director of Monster UK & Ireland, commented: "While the economic outlook remains uncertain, it is encouraging to observe that more than a third of industries across the UK have exhibited annual growth in online recruitment in February.

"Other indicators, such as the latest Office for National Statistics data, also point to positive activity across consumer and business sectors."

Telecommunications, public sector and defence also saw rises, with five per cent more jobs listed online than at this time last year.
